Following on from the last Digital Paladin post “Honey I shrunk the tech!”, I came across an even more dramatic example of miniaturisation. In a recent “What’s Your Problem?” podcast, Emily Leproust, co-founder and CEO of Twist Bioscience, describes how his company is developing a DNA based data storage solution. While the technology is still under development as explained in this BBC article, its potential is staggering. Emily predicts that DNA storage in the future could enable the entire Netflix catalogue to be stored in a device roughly the size of two black beans. In addition, DNA storage has a very long shelf life – potentially in excess of a Millennium – compared to magnetic and other storage media in use today.
