“… I’m sorry, Dave. I’m afraid I can’t do that” – this conversation from 2001: A Space Odyssey is one of the most iconic movie quotes of all time. There is a fascinating story in a recent Wall Street Journal titled “Google Suspends Engineer Who Claimed Its AI System Is Sentient“, about a software engineer who was convinced that the Google LaMDA artificial intelligence chatbot, with which (or whom) he was working with, had become sentient. While it’s not clear if LaMDA has yet passed the Turing Test, this story highlights the incredible progress being made and that it may be a more a matter of when rather than if sentient AI is developed.
